SOTU

Not a bad speech, all in all. Pretty good, in fact. Maybe very good. I just have one small nit to pick....

Given that illegal immigration and border security is hugely on the minds of Americans, I was hoping there might have been some real red meat on the topic. Instead, we were served a bowl of weak broth and platitudes.

One might be tempted to think that Vincente Fox must have a photo of W with a dead Tijuana hooker.

Update: LaShawn Barber focused on illegal immigration during her liveblogging.

Earworm of the Day

There's a picture opposite me
of my primitive ancestry
which stood on rocky shores and kept the beaches shipwreck-free.

Though I respect that a lot
I'd be fired if that were my job
after killing Jason off and countless screaming Argonauts.

Yes, I know the song, album and band in question.

No, I'm not telling.

Long Time No See

Bill Whittle has some news, and a heads-up.

Neat Summary

Life as a shift worker, aptly described on Sunday's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent":

Detective Barek: I've never worked a graveyard shift. It must leave you a lot of time during the day to get things done.

Creepy Suspect: Oh, during the day I just sleep.

Detective Logan: Oh, sleep all day work all night. Aren't you afraid you're missing out?

Creepy Suspect: On what?

Yep. That's about it for me. "On what," indeed.

On the plus side, I'm on swings, not mids, I do get Mondays and Tuesdays off, and there are benefits arising therefrom. Last night, for instance, at about the time I would normally be thinking of having "lunch," I went to go see the Carolina Hurricanes deliver an impressive 7-2 ass-whuppin' to the Montreal Canadiens.

It's not a social life per se, but it's a reasonable substitute.

Seriously Ticked Off

My DVR completely and utterly failed to record the season premiere of 24 last night. I am a bit unhappy about that.

Define "a bit" however you like... but you'll probably underestimate the irritability in this household today.

I wonder if any of my neighbors managed to record it?

Zombie Time

After a rather late night at the office, I suspect that two and a half hours of sleep is not going to be enough to get me through the day.

Question of the Day

Do gnocchi provide any culinary benefit other than being a substrate for whatever sauce you use?

I thought not.

Hearings

Since I'm off work on Mondays, I can watch the Alito confirmation hearings today.

I won't be live-blogging them (or even live-blogging the live-blogging) — I'll leave all that to:

and to whomever else I might happen to find, if I bother to look for more.

Friday Dogblogging

In the interest of fairness, a certain canine has demanded some screen time.* Say hello to Mooch, who owns my brother and his family.

By all accounts, this one year old girl is as sweet as a dog can be, which, really, is pretty darn sweet. Except when she demands sporting attire — then she can be a real... harpy.

* My family could, if they wanted, have their own blogs on this domain. But no, they rely on me to do their dirty work for them. Just a bunch o' slackers, I tells ya!

Don't miss the Friday Ark.

Friday Catblogging

That's right: another cat picture. Just because I can. And because I never get tired of cute furballs.

Mycah has not yet tired of her new box.

I know if I were to go out and buy her a kitty bed, she would shun it.* She's definitely in the "I found this, and claim it as my own; therefore it is superior" school of feline thought.

Plus, pretty girls almost always get whatever they want (I'm pretty sure that's a Federal law) and if she wants the box, then so be it.

* Don't ask me how I know. I just do, mmm'kay?

Be sure to visit the Friday Ark, as well as the Carnival of the Cats, this week at Pages Turned.
